About Me

I was raised in Seattle and have lived here most of my life (apart from a stint in Texas where I met my wife of 30 years). I have three adult children who (along with their partners) continue to bring me joy. I was raised in the LDS church and served a mission in Venezuela, but my beliefs have evolved over the past several years. Over this same time, my political views have also evolved from conservative to liberal.

I am enjoying a long career in tech, which includes:
  • Four years at Compaq Computer Corporation in Houston, TX.
  • Three years at Cirrus Logic in Plano, TX.
  • 21 years at Microsoft where I worked on windows graphics and devices. It was here where I became known by my email alias “smac”.
  • Four years at Niantic, where I supported Pokemon Go and helped design a world class anticheat system.
  • I am currently employed as a principal engineer at a small company named Nuna which creates products and services to support value-based health care initiatives.
My hobbies include:
  • Music and attending concerts
  • Strength training
  • Woodworking
  • Volunteer work for a few different homeless populations
  • Reading
  • Hiking
  • Martial arts (although I have not actively practiced since 2018 – see below)
  • Collecting orthopedic surgeries (10 and counting)
But my wife would say that my favorite hobby is working.

I have a type A personality that I try to hide (but not very successfully), and my unofficial motto is “Anything worth doing is worth overdoing.”
