Africa trip – Day 6: Samburu National Reserve

While 12/7/2024 was technically our second day of safari, it felt like my first as I was incapacitated on my first day. But that was behind me, and having slept for 14 hours, I started the day feeling great! I had no idea what to expect – I knew that I’d see animals, but I didn’t know how many I’d see or how often. The day started great, and only got better!

On the morning game drive, we didn’t even make it out of the resort before we saw a Puff Adder.

We saw so many animals that day, including:

Reticulated giraffes

Grevy’s Zebras

Primates

Baboon
Vervet Monkey

Antelopes and Gazelles

Grant’s Gazelle
Dikdik

Crocodiles

Some cool birds

Vulture
Egret
Secretarybird
Kingfisher?
Great Eagle Owl

And I saw some great scenery!

But the highlight of the day were the elephants (so many elephants)!

This elephant wasn’t super happy to see us (they tend to make it very clear)
We named these two Austin and Wyatt (after our two sons)

So we had an amazing day and we got to see many amazing things! That night as we ate dinner, yet another elephant came to the waterhole to say “hi”. It is surreal eating dinner 50 feet away from an elephant who is also eating, with nothing really separating us.

It’s stupid to keep score (but I will anyway). Running tally of the animals seen so far:

  • Big five: 1 (Elephant)
  • Ugly five: 2 (Vulture, Warthog)
